Dream winners motivated by care

Dream Lottery winners hold up large cheque

From left to right: Children's Health Foundation's Director of Philanthropy Sara Steers, Dream Lottery Grand Prize winners James and Joyce Hawken of Markdale, and St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation's Marketing and Communications Manager Ryan Byrne.

The top two winners of Dream Lottery were revealed the morning of July 19 at the Millstone “Gallery” Dream Home in London.

Selling out a month before the final deadline, Dream Lottery has raised $33.6 million (net) since 1996 in support of Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care London and LHSC. All three foundations were on hand and thanked the Southwestern Ontario community for their support.

St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation President & CEO Michelle Campbell says that includes everyone from staff to volunteers, builders, designers and suppliers who contribute to the lottery’s success.

“Most of all, thanks to all the Dream ticket buyers for helping our hospitals care for the most critically injured and medically complex patients from across the region,” she says.

Those feelings are shared by Grand Prize winners James and Joyce Hawken of Markdale, who won with ticket number 108425.

Almost speechless when told he and his wife had the choice between one of the Dream homes or $1 million cash, James (Jim) Hawken later revealed that – although they haven’t won before -he and Joyce had felt like they were already winners by supporting care at the regional hospitals. That’s because, about 14 years ago, their son suffered a severe head injury that was beyond the resources of their local hospital to treat, so he was quickly transferred to London.

“When he pulled through, it was like we already won the lottery,” says Hawken.

“We will continue to support London hospitals,” Hawken adds. “It is important to family and friends in our community to have a place to go for extra health care when needed, including our grandson, who currently receives outpatient care at Children’s Hospital.”

Sharon Stewart of Hanover takes half of the $1,024,770 prize pool of the region’s largest 50/50 with ticket number 5087226.  She didn’t pick up when initially called by Campbell but lottery officials were able to connect later in the morning.

“Wow, thank-you so much! I hear people clapping in the background…you should see what’s going on here!” Stewart says.

Stewart also revealed that she has been buying tickets for a long time to support the lottery cause. Campbell says the support of ticket buyers like Sharron, Jim and Joyce is so very important because the lottery helps fund research, unique programs, and specialized equipment that would otherwise get little or no funding.

All winning numbers were drawn July 18 at the office of Deloitte LLP in London. The primary purchaser of each winning ticket will be contacted by phone and/or mail. The names of major prize winners are posted here. A printed list of winners is available upon request by calling 1-866-319-9818.

Winning names and numbers for the Dollars & Destinations Calendar draws will be posted each day in August on the Dream Lottery website and on Dream Lottery’s Facebook page.
