Life’s true colours, now a vision to behold for Heather Dubois

Heather can’t say enough good things about Dr. Gonder and the whole team at St. Joseph’s Ivey Eye Institute. It’s no wonder. For the first time in 27 years, she can see perfectly out of her right eye.

“It’s just an incredible thing that Dr. Gonder has done for me,” she says.

Suffering a severe trauma to her eye nearly three decades ago, it wasn’t until this past year she was able to receive surgery, with there being any hopes for a successful outcome.

Immediately upon meeting with the team at Ivey Eye, Heather knew she was in good hands.

“Every part of the process was perfect. From my first appointment, right through to the surgery everyone was so helpful, so understanding, so caring. There wasn’t a time when I didn’t know what was going on, which is very helpful to me. “

Heather is one of the 75,000 people receiving care at the Ivey Eye Institute annually. The largest eye care centre in Canada, it provides regular eye care to the people of London and tertiary care (treatment for complicated eye problems) for people throughout Southwestern Ontario and Northern Ontario.

You play an important role in their care.

Recently, you have donated more than $1.3 million supporting the development of the new Ivey Eye Institute – a 75,000 square-foot facility that houses five minor operating rooms and 52 examination suites.

You have also helped to purchase equipment used in diagnosis, procedures and general care for patients.

It has been a few months since Heather’s successful surgery and her enthusiasm for the care she received and her restored vision has not faded. “I am just thrilled to have my sight back. I feel like a child looking out the window, because I can see things that I hadn’t seen properly for so long. I never get tired of looking at the birds and the sky and seeing all the real colours the world has to offer.”

A spiritual person, Heather feels blessed for her care, and is grateful for the guidance God provided to her surgeons’ hands.

“It’s a good life,” she says.
