Breast Care Centre
“Waiting is unbelievable. It’s excruciating. It’s almost scarier waiting than the actual treatment. At least when you are being treated, you know you are getting better.”
- Kelly Rowcliffe, breast cancer survivor
Waiting, not knowing, not understanding….these feelings all create anxiety and lead to fear and frustration.
For women in London facing a diagnosis of breast cancer, these feelings are common and very real.
Change is underway
A new breast care centre at St. Joseph’s will be a unique, multidisciplinary program providing the most comprehensive, rapid-access breast care in Canada. It will fully operational in 2012.
The centre will:
- streamline care
- reduce the average wait time between abnormal mammogram and surgery from 132 days to 49 days
- shorten wait time for biopsy from 99 days to 1 day
- offer increased support for patients from an expert navigation team of nurses who will coordinate all care from the time a woman first comes in for breast assessment through the rest of her care journey
- provide equitable services for patients requiring breast care and consistent education and support throughout their course of care
- offer improved access to digital imaging equipment, which is proven to enhance cancer detection
