Annual Reports
On behalf of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, we are pleased to present our 2007-08 annual report, a review of our activities over the past fiscal year, and how your donations have supported and enhanced patient care across St. Joseph’s.
In 2007, the foundation reached a new stage of maturity in its development. Through well-developed planning processes, sound policy development, and a strategic approach to philanthropy, the foundation is focused both on urgent patient care priorities and on long-term opportunities that build sustainable resources for medical research.
2008-09 will mark St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation’s 4th anniversary
following the merger of our two legacy foundations, and the final year of its
first strategic plan. Since its legal formation in 2005, St. Joseph’s Health Care
Foundation has:
- granted a total of $21.9 M to patient care across St. Joseph’s
- received donations totaling $21.1 M
- grown its endowed funds from $24 M to $31 M
- reduced its overall operating expenses by 7.8 per cent
A STRONG YEAR
The foundation experienced another year of strong financial performance in 2007-08. Donor gifts received reached $7.3 million, an increase of 2.8 per cent over 2006-07. Together with pledged commitments, the foundation generated more than $9 million. This performance enabled disbursements of close to $5 million for a variety of patient care projects in frontline care, research and education. As part of that commitment, more than $800,000 was granted to support a variety of scientific positions and projects at the Lawson Health Research Institute, the research arm of St. Joseph’s. A highlight of the year was the receipt of a $1-million gift to benefit patient care at Parkwood Hospital. Made anonymously, this generous gift represents the largest ever received for clinical care in Parkwood Hospital’s history. This very special gift created The Friends of Parkwood Patient & Resident Care Endowment Fund, which will provide annual support for frontline medical equipment and comfort items for patients and residents for years to come.
OUR ACCOUNTABILITY TO YOU
As part of our accountability commitment to our community, we have provided a sampling of some of the 2007-08 projects that benefited from donor support in the past year. Please take a moment to read further about the projects made possible through your generosity in the past year. We continue to live up to the promise of accountability and transparency through our commitment to Imagine Canada’s Ethical Fundraising & Financial Accountability Code of Conduct. Adhering to the Code, Joseph’s Health Care Foundation has entrenched the it in its own stewardship policy. At year-end, we learned that we had successfully met the new conditions for renewal. Strengthening our ccountability is also a key goal in our foundation’s strategic plan. This important goal speaks to the need for the foundation to continue to strive to build our commitment to donor stewardship through relationship management and public disclosure. Apart from donor accountability, it also stresses our accountability to St. Joseph’s and the importance of our relationships with clinical leadership and frontline staff in our work. This goal also ensures strategies are in place to enable the foundation to better assess its costs and benchmark performance against other industry comparators
